Viddler - tags inside video makes for better instructional design

Terence Armentano | December 22, 2006 | 12:59 pm

You have heard of YouTube, Google Video, and other Social Video sites. Now Viddler enters the scene with a unique twist. Viddler makes search results relevant since Viddler searches INSIDE the content of videos. A user can tag a video at any moment inside a video with a key word so that when you search for something specific, you can go right to that specific part of the video instead of having to watch the whole thing.

This is a nice tool to be incorporated into video for online instruction. For example, instead of sifting through an entire video lecture on Maslow’s Hierarchy, one could easily search for and identify the part of the lecture on “Social Needs” if it were tagged.

Bubbleshare - Add Audio and Video to Images

Terence Armentano | December 19, 2006 | 2:27 pm

The strategic use of audio, video, images, and text, is crucial to designing learning environments in online courses. Bubbleshare is a simple to use product with cool implications for the online instructor. It allows the users to include audio and video narration to images. This is great for telling stories, critiquing photography and other forms of media, language learning, and more.

I contacted them because the audio and video is not working when I embedded it in this blog so hopefully they will be able to get it fixed. If you click on the image below, you will see what is supposed to happen.

You are Time Magazine’s Person of the Year

Terence Armentano | December 18, 2006 | 10:52 am

Time Magazine has selected you and me as their Person of the Year because of our role in receiving and distributing information in this new era. Essentially they are proclaiming that we control the media. User created content is HUGE on the web and will only continue to grow. Site’s like Digg, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, and the millions of blogs on the net proclaim that you have the power. The irony is that Time Magazine selected you as their person of the year because you control the media…hmmmmm.

How to succeed in 2007

Terence Armentano | December 15, 2006 | 12:39 pm

CNN Business 2.0 asked 50 of the brightest minds in business how they do what they do - and how you can cash in on their advice in the year ahead.

See what they say here: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/howtosucceed/index.html

Fact: Toby, from the TV show “The Office,” is also one of the writers and executive producers of the show. That show is pretty hilarious.

Skype 3.0

Terence Armentano | | 4:03 pm

Video and audio communication over the internet adds some really neat aspects to online teaching and learning. Would you like to call or video conference anyone in the world for free using your computer? Would you pay $15 a year to call any landline phone with your computer in the US and Canada? Would you like to to do some free video conferencing online with your students? How might these techniques enhance your online course? I’m no salesperson, but I will advocate something if I think it can benefit education and Skype is one nice application that uses peer to peer technology to enhance online communication. Check out their most recent version— Skype 3.0

I am looking forward to the day that my students and colleagues in the 3rd world will call me for free from their $100 laptops. The global classroom is just around the corner.

Feel free to give me a call sometime via skype. My skype name is terenceonline

The quest for knowledge is a journey that every human embarks upon in his/her life. It is a quest that has spurred innovation across the globe from Gutenberg’s printing press to Einstein’s Relativity to your own discoveries. It has been said that humans only utilize 10% of their brain. Wouldn’t it be great to use more. How can we target those untapped areas of our brain? The following article suggests 77 ways to hack into those barren places of the brain enabling one to learn faster, deeper, and better. http://oedb.org/library/college-basics/hacking-knowledge

Biggest Mistakes in Web Design

Terence Armentano | | 9:33 am

If you are a breathing person and either maintain a website or want to build a website, I encourage you to take the time to have it done right…especially if you are a professor or business person. Just because you own a copy of Photoshop and Frontpage or have IWEB installed on your MAC, doesn’t mean you are a graphic designer or web-designer. A poorly designed site can make any intelligent person or organization look unintilligent pretty quick. So if you are diving into developing a website or hiring someone to do it for you, I recommend the following article titled, Biggest Mistakes in Web Design. If you can look past the authors sometimes bizzarre commentary, this article actually provides plenty of good tips on what to do and what not to do when designing a site.
